Gudday! I live on board a little sailboat anchored out in San Diego and I just love this city. There is always something to see or do or experience, it’s great fun all the time. If you have never been to San Diego before then come Say Gudday to us, we love new visitors!
One of the best things about San Diego is that there are a lot of really cool things for you and your family to do that are completely free like walking the waterfront and visiting Seaport Village. And when you do take a walk down the waterfront you will see sailboats, just like mine, cruise ships as they come into port and depart and street artists hawking their wares. But don’t be alarmed, they are all very nice and not pushy at all. In fact there is a guy there that makes fake flowers and I always see him giving some away for free.
You’ll also pass The Star Of India, a magnificent tall ship that is reported to be the oldest, metal hulled sailing ship in the world that still sails regularly. Which reminds me that you will be lucky enough to see the mock cannon battle where tall ships duel it out with thunderous booms of their cannons. Did I mention that this is all free fun in San Diego?
You’ll walk right next to The USS Midway, so close that you can count the rivets in her hull. You can clearly see the fighter planes on her deck and you can even tour her with a self guided, audio tour that costs about $17 per person as of this article.
And then, right next to the Midway is one of San Diego’s most fun landmarks, the giant, kissing sailor statue called “Unconditional Surrender.” The statue is 25 feet tall and weighs 6,000 pounds. Created by J. Seward Johnson, there is just something both whimsical and yet touching about this tender embrace between a sailor and a nurse. Obviously it reminds us all of the Time magazine cover at the end of World War 2 and it has a special place in the heart of every local resident.
